The United Nations has declared June 21 as ‘International Day of Yoga’
Following a proposal by Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi, to the world community at the UNGA speech, on 26th Sept 2014, that India’s Yoga should be celebrated as World Yoga Day, UN General Assembly adopted a resolution, with a record number of 175 country co-sponsors, for observance of International Day of Yoga June 21 each year. The 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted by acclamation draft Resolution A/69/L.17 with a record number of 175 countries co-sponsoring it. This resolution has been brought about in an unprecedented manner. It is the first time that such an initiative has been proposed and implemented by any country in the UN General Assembly in less than 90 days.
The Grand Yoga lineages of India and the grand Yoga Masters of India met in 2011, December, 4th and 5th in Bengaluru, India- on the Art of Living Foundation Headquarters, by invitation of Shri Shri Ravi Shankar and the President of the Yoga Portuguese Confederation. During this Summit was Proclaimed the World Yoga Day on the Solstice-June 21st- the Day of Light and Wisdom associated to it, and with the support of the Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha and the VYASA-Vivekananda Yoga University, it is a date that does not celebrate any human event, but is a Cosmic Auspice, a day that highlights the relation between the Earth and the Sun, and by consequence with the Galaxy and the Cosmos, and sung in all cultures that have observed and studied their surroundings, where they belong, in all times and in all continents.
Why June 21st?
The choice of the Yoga World’s Day, looking above, naturally leaned towards Solstice (Place of the Sun) – June 21st, Day of the Light, of the anti-obscurantist Wisdom, through thousands of years associated with Supreme Knowledge / Intellective Enlightenment / Cosmic Consciousness (Samādhi) that Yoga pragmatic Philosophers constantly aim for. Day when the Fantastic Planetary/Solar/Galactic interactions are more evident and intense and Light that Yoga Masters and addicts have been have been celebrating and singing since the deepest ancient times (the largest day of the year in the north Hemisphere, where the biggest mass of Continents is placed and therefore the Civilisation).
Fruition of Global efforts
As a zenith, to all these efforts: Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi in his UNGA speech called for a change in lifestyle and for creating consciousness said Yoga could even help deal with climate change.
“Yoga is an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature,” he said.
India received support of 175 nations. As many as 50 countries including China, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and also South Africa and Nigeria in Africa have supported the move. Neighbours such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka were amongst the earliest to sign on. Latin American giants Brazil and Argentina too have committed support. With USA and Canada joining recently, the EU members also joined as co-sponsors soon in what, according to official sources, is turned out to be a broad-based coalition of support that has countries as disparate as Iran and Cuba on board have signed up for co-sponsorship of a draft resolution which India’s UN mission is preparing for declaring June 21 as international Yoga day.
