Indea Foundation (A public Charitable Trust) in association with Yoga Bharata conducted a Special Yoga Workshop on 23rd August 2015 between 7 a.m. and 9.a.m. with special focus on “Weight Balance”.

The workshop was conducted at Yogacharya Bharath Shetty giving primary focus on 5 Techniques that help tone the muscles and reduce the fat around the abdomen.

Two workshops on 2nd and 4th Sundays will be conducted every month. The workshop on the 2nd Sunday is directed to yoga practitioners of intermediate and advanced levels, called Master Workshop and the one on 4th Sunday is Special Workshop for General Public focusing on topics of Wellness through Yoga.

The Methodology of the workshop:

Breath is life. It is our most primal function. It affects and is affected by every level of our being. It is totally automatic, yet completely within our control.

IndeaYoga a yogic system developed by Yogacharya Bharath Shetty sees breath as a tool that coordinates body and mind. The mission of Indeayoga is to help breathe in order to lead life ‘With Presence’.

The way we breathe is a reflection and an expression of the way we live. IndeaYoga believes that by understanding breath we discover ourselves. By changing the way we breathe, we change the way we live.

A yogi measures the span of life by the number of breaths, not by the number of years. -Swami Sivananda

The aim of the workshop was to impart technique of conscious breathing, control of breath, Understanding breathing as foundation to practice pranayama, and working out leading to mental relaxation.

The 5 Techniques chosen for the workshop were to fulfill this purpose and to work on abdomen area in order to remove excess fat and keep it well toned.

The method followed for presenting the 5 Kriyas was –

  • Explanation of one Technique at a time,
  • Demonstration of the Technique by Yogacharya Bharath Shetty,
  • Participants made to practice the Technique, supported by Yogacharya and assisting teachers.
  • Answering of questions raised by the participants related to the Technique.

Directing the Workshop:

The workshop started with the opening prayer.

ॐ sahanā vavatu, sahanau bhunaktu, sahaviryam karavāvahe

Tejasvi nāvadhītamastu Mā vidviṣāvahai

ॐ śānti śānti śāntiḥ

“Let both of us protect each other together. May both of us enjoy together. May both of us work together- Let our study become radiant. Let there be no misunderstanding between us. Om: Peace, Peace, Peace”.

The Techniques taken up were:

  1. Mukha Dhouti
  2. Agnisar
  3. Uddiyana
  4. KapalaBhati
  5. Surya Bedana

Preparation Pose for Mukha Dhauti and Agnisara

Preparation Pose for Mukha Dhauti and Agnisara

  • Mukha Dhouti (Cleansing through a single blast breath)

This technique helps us consciously breath from below the naval (Hara) and above the genitals and engages in connecting with the entire body.

It churns the annus, genital and naval that are representations of the earth, the water and the fire.

It is said that normally a human takes 18-22 breaths in a minute. While practice of asanas helps regulate our breath between 12-5 a minute (as we advance), practice of Pranayama makes us slow down breaths to 5-1 times a minute; Meditation slows our breath further to 1 breath in 3 minutes. Mukha Dhouti is the first needed step to doing effective asanas, later pranayama leading to meditation.

Should be done on empty stomach,

Should be done in the early morning hours,

Beginner’s should practice at a slow pace and increase week after week.

Benefits –

Breathing becomes rhythmic

Breathing becomes slower,

Stress, anger, sadness are ironed out, calms the mind,

During Asthma attack, forceful exhalation helps the patients.

Technique should not end up in exhaustion. It should lead to mental relaxation. Be conscious of exhalation and keep inhalation natural.

Persons having hearth conditions, vertigo, epilepsy, slip disc, lower back and neck problems should do this technique slowly,

Ladies during their menstruation should also practice at a slower pace.

Place your legs apart (about a meter)

Stand with a slight forward bend of the trunk,

Palms on the thighs,

Inhale deeply through the nose,

Exhale forcibly through mouth, experiencing the naval being pulled in

Repeat several times (20-30 times)

Relax when you need to and continue. Be conscious that you are well relaxed by the end of this kriya.

Yogacharya Bharath Shetty demonstrating Agnisara

Yogacharya Bharath Shetty demonstrating Agnisara

  • Agnisar Kriya-(Stimulating the Digestive Fire)

Agni means ‘fire’ and Sara means ‘essence’ so it literally means to balance samanavayu, fire chakra (Manipur Chakra) located at the navel center. Agnisar technique directs the mind and body to lighten up. Practice of this technique absorbs the maximum essence of the food and burns off the toxins. As agni creates heat, it balances all four vayus of our body. A state of Samanavayu is achieved.

‘What we eat we become and we think as we become’.

Should be practiced on empty stomach. If water must be had, have it in sips –few.

Too little or too much is not good. Agnisar should be practiced for 5 to 10 minutes. 2-minute rest should be taken after practicing 5 minutes.

Melts excessive fat in abdomen,

Makes body light and energetic throughout the day,

Overcomes laziness, disinterest,

Strengthens the internal organs, muscles, nerves and blood veins,

People with lung problems benefit from this practice,

Subsides asthma, TB, entire throat related and kapha problems.

Do not practice in the evening, as this technique creates heat that does not facilitate a good sleep.

Avoid Stressing of shoulder and neck.

People with High Blood Pressure and Hypertension should not hold breath but just focus on contracting the abdomen from anus to diaphragm.

Place your legs apart (about a meter)

Stand with a slight forward bend of the trunk,

Palms on the thighs,

Keep inhalation natural and exhale once with force through mouth and snap the abdomen backwards and forwards a few times.

Practice 10-15 movements holding the breath and increase your rounds from 1 to 5.

Be conscious of movement from Anus to Diaphragm in each movement.

  • Uddiyana Kriya

This technique reiterates the principle that when abdomen is pulled back towards the spine and raised inside the rib cage holding the breath out, it lightens up the body and thus the mind.

Technique of Uddiyana

Technique of Udyana

Uddiyana means raising the abdomen up and flying high.

Kapala Bhati- forceful exhalation

  • KaphalaBhati (Purification of Frontal lobes and lungs)

Keep the spine straight,

Can sit in a chair and practice,

Pressure of exhalation is the key in this practice.

Relaxes the facial muscles and nerves thus helps prevent ageing process,

Destroys mucous disorders,

Works for Migraine, Bronchitis, Tension Headache, Allergies, Asthma, strengthens digestion.

Do not over exert, start slow and build the practice in 3 – 6 weeks,

Should be practiced only in the mornings or sleep will get disturbed if practiced otherwise.

Not to be practiced during menstruation,

Not to be practiced when stomach is full

Slow down recommended for persons with Hernia, High Blood Pressure and Heart problems.

KaphalaBhati is forceful and continuous exhalation through nose.

Inhalation is passive.

If both the nostrils are closed do spot jogging – making soft movement on toes and not knees.

Aound 12 rounds of Suryanamaskara can help clear the blockage of nostrils.

Inhalation through right nostril-Surya Bedana

Inhalation through right nostril-Surya Bedana

  • Surya bedana (Right Nostril Breathing)

Surya bedana kriya is a pranayama that activates the surya nadi, the right nostril. Research has proved that breathing through right nostril controls weight and breathing through the left gains weight. Right nostril, also called Pingala Nadi activates samanaprana and all bodily functions.

sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ, sarve santu nirāmayāḥ

Sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu, mā kaścidduḥkhabhāgbhavet

ॐ śānti śānti śāntiḥ

“May all be happy, may all be free from disabilities, May all look to the good of others, and may none suffer from sorrow. Om: Peace, Peace, Peace”.
